As any dietitian can attest to, the key to losing weight lies in management of calories - knowing what to eat, when to eat it and how to eat it.

It almost sounds like an oxymoron - eating to lose weight, but the truth is with the right diet, one can indeed eat to lose weight.

That said, here are 5 tips to keep in mind when you're on a diet.

Eat with small plates:
The key to eating to lose weight lies in eating in small portions. Therefore, help your cause by eating with small plates that'll force you to serve smaller portions. Reverse will be the case if you're looking to gain weight, but we digress.

Overdose on fruits and vegetables: This never gets old. Fruits are very filling and even better, healthy and super cleansing. So fill up on fruits/vegetables and this way you don't have to worry about heavy food.

Eat slowly:
Try eating slowly as it takes time for our brains to register that we're full so be indlugent.
Give your food undivided attention: Keep your phone away and definitely stay away from the television. This is because we're likely to eat more when eating distractedly, so focus on your food and be done with it.

Eat to be f eel satisfied, not stuffed: This means no second helpings, just eat enough to satisfy the hunger pangs and be done with it.
